Program History
The Blackfeet Housing Voucher Program was associated with the HUD Section 8-Housing Choice Voucher Programs, but in 1996 HUD established the NAHASDA act for Indian Housing. This act encouraged Indian Housing to become self sufficient and self regulated. Since this time the BH Voucher Program is still funded through HUD, but now through the Office of Native American Programs and is not related to the Section 8 programs any longer. The BH Voucher Program policy and regulation is now developed, funded and implemented by the Blackfeet Housing Board and is unique to Blackfeet Housing.
Since 1996 we were awarded 95 vouchers to distribute to community members. These voucher have been a regular part of the Blackfeet Housing budget since, but no additional vouchers have been added. (We continue to seek additional funding through private foundations and other grant opportunities to fund our “Student Voucher Program”.)
The Voucher Program is split into two types of vouchers called the “Regular Voucher” and the “Student Voucher”. Awarded individuals and families are chosen from the “Waiting List” as they come to the top of this list. To find out more about the Voucher Programs use the links provided on the left.
